Ok guys, thanks to both of you, I am now at 10.6.3.

noway, after the update combo and legacy installed I clicked restart. Got the same result as previous i.e Blue screen with black dial not revolving. Forced reboot and found BIOS altered same as last time(s). Pressed F1 booted up ok. This is with the original CPU that has no probs with 10.5.
I now have to get my Nvidia working, I don't have acceleration ? but I saw instructions on the link you put up . Will attack this tomorrow, its 11.40 pm in Uk so I'm off to sleep.
Again, many thanks for the help and advice.
    regards,
    Eddie

Could be because you are trying to install to an EIDE drive.
My installers wouldn't allow me to install on anything other than SATA and USB. I had to add the AppleATIATA.kext with kext wizard after I had it up and running. Then my EIDE drives showed up.

Yep, thats what I thought too.
Kexts in S/L/E will be updated by the combo and if you need some special additions, you´ll have to reinstall those every time you have updated. Give System Info a try to find out what is running in 10.6.3. Hard to tell from here what is missing.

The nvidia should work as AppliArt wrote, EFI Studio that was, I think.

The earliest version I have heard of being installed was 10.4. And that is even harder than installing onto an AMD machine!

Install the 10.6 again choosing just the bare minimum to run on your platform, download the 10.6.8 ComboUpdate.dmg, plus the legacy_kernel-10.8.0.v2.pkg to your harddrive. Open the 10.6.8 ComboUpdate.dmg, click on the package there and follow the prompts. Do NOT restart afterward, yet. Click on the legacy pkg and install that, following the prompts. Now you can reboot, and the stuff should work with out major problems.
alaskan, can I upgrade to 10.6.8 directly from 10.6 by using the 10.6.8 ComboUpdate.dmg, plus the legacy_kernel-10.8.0.v2.pkg only? Thanks!

Gentlemen, Interim update. current as at 11.55 am uk time.
I ran Kext Wizard and loaded AppleATITA.kext, didn't work. I checked in both S/L/E and Extra and it was in both. I also ran EFIStudio and loaded what I thought was the correct device which didn't do anything. I then rechecked and realised it was the GT version whereas I require the GS . So am currently looking for that.
    Am D/L 10.6.8.
Re the mention of 10.2 earlier on in the thread, I should have been writing 10.5.2, I dropped the 5 sorry, I will claim I was having a senior moment , at 66 yrs of age I'm allowed that option.( trouble with age is what one might be thinking of in the brain and what comes from the mouth can be two totally unrelated subjects). a bit of advice about getting old? DON'T!!!
    -----------------------------------
Further update. I have had to switch to my 10.5.2, the 10.6.8 install went ok(?) however I cannot use Safari, I click on this site get to it, click on the forum and the bouncing ball appears and I have to force the quit. Tried several times with the same result each time.

You can update directly from 10.6.0 or 10.6.1 to 10.6.8 with the comboupdate for 10.6.8, and then install the 10.6.8 legacy_kernel.

Nice work, Eddie, 10.6.8 on a not so common AMD unit.
Do you need Safari badly? I´m running Firefox with all my boxes except for the Eee, which has Shiira2.3.
I recall Safari issues, if QE/CI wasn´t running.
Did you already check your devices with SytemInfo.app under 10.6?
That might help in finding a driver for your graphics card.
(The 6100 onboard GPU will be a hopeless case, Im afraid.)

Did your BIOS reset strike again? Could it be your PRAM voltage is becoming low?

Off topic: Would you like to share your experience with 10.5 on AMD and write a how-to maybe?
More off topic: Thanks for the "live hard, die young" advice. Comes too late for me unfortunately.

noway, Firefox never thought about , but will give it a go, although I actually prefer Safari, reason why is , I ,like you from what you say started a long time ago and because of the restrictions that applied then I still run my modern comps the same way. i.e. I never open more than two tabs in a browser and alway reboot the browser after every page so to speak. I found with Ff it often fails to close whereas Safari never has this peculiarity. Am writing on 10.5 at the moment so I will hook up the 10.6.8 drive later on.
Yes the BIOS reset is still there , I also notice that I cannot do a reset, it hangs at a Blue screen. I just close it down and reboot.
Yes I checked the 10.6 Syspref and also the 10.5 and there is a difference in the DEV ID and the REV ID on video. On that subject I noted that the 10.6 install options were somewhat less than the 10.5 and that's why the video isn't loaded.
Another thing not working in 10.6 is I cannot copy n paste with the mouse I resorted to using the keybrd.
I don't know if my 10.5 install experience would help much, I simply put the dvd in and used the -s -x and away it went. I also installed it onto a P4 laptop by simply inserting the dvd and starting the comp, sans any options and got a near perfect install.
But, yes I could write one , where and how please?

10.6 up and Ff loaded , looking good!!!

noway, I had earlier today used Kext Wizard to load(?) the AppleATITA.kext. I can see it in S/L/E and Extra. Also when I select KW "loaded " it appears at the bottom of the Loaded page. I then reboot and the S/L/E and Extra remain the same but the loaded page is minus the kext ?
    Any suggestions please?

Yes, Firefox and Thunderbird btw, were improved much over the years.
For your Leopard on Intel experiences, some post in the Leopard section with hardware specs might be a nice addition.
I´m unsure about the copy/paste and the other issues, but I recall many limlitations when QE/CI was not running.
Probably you should try to fix the graphics first, if possible.

If I recall correctly, kexts should go either to S/L/E or to E/E. The lesser stuff installed, the better.
On a normal boot, the Mac will load the extensions from mkext.
The cached stuff may differ from the contents of the two folders.
I have additional pATA drives in my Intel box too, and sometimes the DVD is quite unresponsive.
The HDD is a old server drive and still reports perfect SMART conditions.

Hope you can cure the BIOS issue somehow, I recall loosing a Athlon 2000 board with a fried IDE controller.
It showed such strange behavior prior of failing.
