    Default 10.6 on an AMD/ECS combo ...

Hi, Yesterday I managed an almost perfect install of Leopard 10.2 onto an AMD/ECS combo. I was impressed with it and wrote it up on the 10.2 thread. One of the forum members was commenting/helping me and suggested I try Snow Leopard 10.6 . Today I did just that and oh! what fun I've had, with some very dubious results.
I used the OSX86 mod cd and a 10.6 retail. All appeared to go well until the final part when a Blue screen with a Black dial appeared which proceeded to hang , I forced the reboot and then when the Award screen appeared ( shows the CPU and drives etc) I noticed the line saying Verifying Data. I rebooted and went into the BIOS where I found several options altered. The first boot option which should have read CD was showing removeable, several other options throughout the BIOS had been altered. I rebooted pressed F1 the bootup finished and 10.6 appeared.
I checked it out and the only thing not working was the ability to change the screen res, ( unlike Leopard 10.2 ).
I then downloaded the 10.6 updates, accepted the reboot when finished option and let it install. The update install went till the writing scripts screen which hung on the final part. Again I waited 30 minutes and ended up forceing the reboot.
I was then presented with a grey screen and an Apple , no Black dial. Left it for 30 minutes . Ended up reinstalling.
After several reinstalls I am now at the point of a bare 10.6 sans updates etc.
The only other thing I have noticed is the Hard drive icon which should be in the top right corner isn't there.
I also installed Xmarks which doesn't complete the install .

Sorry to hear about your mischief.
Can you try another Mod CD maybe?
Nawcom improved things over time so much, that installation should work out of the box
For me version 0.3.1 Nawcom OSX ModCD - Downloads - OSx86.net did the trick on my Biostar mobo.
The Bio is quite similar to your ECS, but as posted in another thread,
I did the install routine more than a dozen times until OSX was almost perfectly running.
You certainly did read AppliArtīs guide, but anyway here it is:

    Good luck!

noway, hoped you would read my 10.6 fiasco . I spent 15 hours yesterday playing with 10.6. At one stage something went so out of whack I ended up using Gpart to format the disk and started all over again. I changed the cpu at some time during the day and maybe that contributed somewhat.
I have gone back to 10.2 as everything is nigh on perfect .
Re the cpu change above, I had to reinstall the original cpu to allow 10.2 to install and when I changed again it refused to boot, hence my statement I think the CPU had some part in the fiasco.
My biggest question which is the reason i hoped you would read as per above is the way that the software 10.6 was changing the BIOS settings. I've been in computers for over 40 years and have never come across that.
    cheers, Eddie.

Wow, Eddie fourty years in computers? Let me think...something like a IBM XT or AppleII maybe?
The first box I bought was the Amiga 2000.

    GParted is my Friend too.
The only thing I can think of, that might have reset your BIOS is the cpu exchange itself.
10.6 will not touch your BIOS , as its not even aware of it, being an EFI system.
I recall a BIOS reset when replacing my 5000+ with the 640. BIOS realizes something strange and defaults.
With OSX, I could change my E2180 for a E5700 flawlessly, but thats Intel, of course.
Hope your further procedure will go well. The combo updates are available and so are the legacy kernels.
Have a backup with CCC on USB if you can and make it bootable with Chimera.
Thats what I did. Much less harm in case I should screw up something badly.

Ya might want to do some more research on it.

If you can get 10.2 to run, you shouldn't have any problem at all running 10.6!
The earliest version I have heard of being installed was 10.4. And that is even harder than installing onto an AMD machine!

Install the 10.6 again choosing just the bare minimum to run on your platform, download the 10.6.8 ComboUpdate.dmg, plus the legacy_kernel-10.8.0.v2.pkg to your harddrive. Open the 10.6.8 ComboUpdate.dmg, click on the package there and follow the prompts. Do NOT restart afterward, yet. Click on the legacy pkg and install that, following the prompts. Now you can reboot, and the stuff should work with out major problems.

alaskan, I might hook up a spare H/D and have a go at your suggestion, although I have to say" noway " I think offered that idea on a previous thread.
I initially didn't have any prob with 10.6 it was only when I ran the official update from a point of attack, namely ignorance that it all went haywire.
Re 10.2, I loaded that onto an Acer Aspire 1804 laptop as my first ever attempt without any changes. Just stuck the disk in the drive and ended up with an almost perfect install.

If you click the apple in the upper left hand corner, then try software update, That won't work. You have to run it from the .dmg file, which mounts a virtual harddisk in order for it to work right.

If you are referring to OSX Leopard, that is 10.5, not 10.2 10.2 was PPC only and can not be installed on Intel or AMD machines.

Could it be, you were talking of kernel versions instead of OS versions?
    E.g. a kernel 10.8 would run in a 10.6.8 Snow Leo.
BTW one of the fastest kernels on Intel, I have seen so far.
That way Eddie would have run a 10.6.2 OSX, right?
Those early releases had much better compatibility with low end cpus.

10.2 was a slip of the tongue, sorry. Although I do have a mac and maybe that had something to do with my mistake.

I have a couple of the G4 PPC models in my back room. Both with hacked OSX 5 on them, because neither had a fast enough speed for the installer. Runs fine on both, just Mother Mac trying to get people to buy new machines.
