Default Chameleon does not see my Ubuntu partition

I have Chameleon RC3 installed on USB flash stick. I have 3 separate hard drives: SL, Win7, Ubuntu. When I boot Chameleon, it only shows the OSX and Windows boot partitions. I tried removing the OSX and Windows drives and booted with just the Ubuntu drive, but when i did, Chameleon did not even load. I got a black screen with nothing on it.

Any ideas or suggestions? Ubuntu was installed to the HD with all other HDs and the Chameleon USB stick removed so i'm pretty sure it installed Grub to the correct spot.

you need to install grub to the partition containing ubuntu not the master boot record.

Just a guess - could you unmount the Ubuntu drive automatically at login to OS X?

But they're not mounted. OSX doesn't support mounting Linux ext3 or swap partitions natively (at least that's what i understand). So when i log in, it sees the partitions and doesn't understand what they are so it asks to initialize.

Is anyone dual booting using Chameleon to switch between OSX and Linux?

My trick was to create a small partition at the end of the Ubuntu drive and format it as either a Mac, or Fat32. You may need to do this with PartedMagic boot CD.

If you format it as a small mac volume and say you call it "Dummy", the in Terminal you could type

    Sudo chflags hidden /Volumes/Dummy/

This way the drive will always be hidden, and you will not get the nag message. Mine is formatted as fat32.... I am gonna try this trick right now.....

Tried, but now I realize that I have my Ubuntu drive plugged to one of my purple sata ports on the motherboard, and the Mac system does not see drives connected here... Perhaps this could be a solution for you as well, although my original ideas should work as well.

I take it the purple SATA ports are provided by a third party SATA chipset like JMicron. I have the EP45-DS3R which has 6 SATA ports connected via the Intel chipset so it looks like i'm out of luck.

I'll try the Dummy partition tip and report back my results.

I put Ubuntu on a separate disk. How does one move the grub installer to the other partition? Is there a tutorial somehwere?

    TIA,

found an answer right here in this forum!!! duh!

all you need to do is specify Install Boot Loader as /dev/sda1 under the advanced options just prior to the cd taking over the install process.

replugged everything in...and SL, W7, and Penguins came up under chameleon.

    Seems to work ok.

Okay...not as elegant as I thought. After doing the update to Ubuntu, selecting linux from chameleon puts me into the grub loader. grrrrrrr.

Okay....now this method for some reason has completely screwed up my Windows 7 install. I have no idea why. Why does it need to be so insufferably difficult.
