Thumbs up AsRock VISION 3D 137D : Mac OSX Lion 10.7.1 Install from Scratch

    AsRock VISION 3D 137D
Mac OSX Lion 10.7.1 Install from Scratch

    Hardware Specifications :

    CPU : Intel Core i3 370M
    Video : NVIDIA GeForce GT425M
    Audio : Realtek ACL892
    LAN : Realtek RTL8111/8168B
    WiFi : AR9287

What Works & What Does Not :

Audio : YES (both Analog & Digital)
CardReader : UNKNOWN (to be tested)
CPU : YES (no Kernel patch required as MacOSX 10.7.x Lion includes Intel Core i Series Support)
eSATAII : UNKNOWN (to be tested - should work considering eSATAII port uses motherboard's controller)
InfraRed : NO (Internal Receiver cannot be recognized by Mira nor RemoteBuddy/Candelair - not even sure internal receiver's detected - may have to use external USB IR receiver)
    LAN : YES
    ReBoot : YES
    ShutDown : YES
    Sleep : YES
USB : YES (USB 3.0 support to be tested - should work with or without additional kEXT)
WiFi : YES (Requires specific kEXT installation - IO80211Family.kext)
Video : YES (HDMI Only - DVI does not provide signal passed the Standard Apple Boot Screen - can be worked around using hardware adapter)
    BlueTooth* : YES
(*) using extra Small Form Factor Bluetooth USB Dongle from Belkin - Zero driver required

    PreRequisites :

AsRock VISION 3D 137D (3D Vision Manufacturing - ASRock Inc.)
    USB Drive (at least 8GB)
    UniBeast v1.0.0 (tonymacx86 Forum • Information)
    MultiBeast v4.2.0 (tonymacx86 Forum • Information)
    Lion AR9287 IO80211Family.kext (http://www.osx86.net/view/1626-lion_...mily.kext.html)
    Kext Helper b7 (http://cheetha.net/)
MacOSX Lion 10.7.1 (Retail from App Store - either 'Install Mac OSX Lion.app' OR 'Install ESD.dmg')

    Step by Step :

1 - Create bootable UniBeast Lion installation USB drive from App Store Retail 'Install ESD.dmg'
2 - Install MacOSX Lion onto internal Hard Drive
3 - Reboot and select USB drive as BIOS boot device (Press F11) - Then on Chimera's BootLoader Red Apple, select Internal Drive
4 - MacOSX Lion now booted : At this point, BOTH HDMI & DVI outputs work (1024x768) and so does GigaBit LAN (but NOT WiFi)
    5 - Install MultiBeast v4.2.0 (/Applications)

    MultiBeast Setup :

    EasyBeast Install
    Drivers & BootLoaders > Kexts & Enablers > Audio > Realtek ALC8xx > ALC8xxHDA
    Drivers & BootLoaders > Kexts & Enablers > Audio > Realtek ALC8xx > AppleHDA Rollback
    Drivers & BootLoaders > Kexts & Enablers > Audio > Realtek ALC8xx > Non-DSDT HDAEnabler > ALC892
    Drivers & BootLoaders > Kexts & Enablers > Graphics > NVIDIA GF100 Fermi Patches > OpenCL Enabler 10.7.0 / 10.7.1
    Drivers & BootLoaders > Kexts & Enablers > Network > Realtek Gigabit Ethernet 2.0.6 for 10.7

    6 - Reboot
7 - Upon reboot, you will still need to install WiFi kEXT using Kext Helper
    8 - Reboot
9 - Upon reboot, you will need to re-run MultiBeast & re-install ONLY GigaBit LAN (WiFi setup broke GigaBit LAN support in my experience)
10 - Reboot one last time

    Setup Complete

    So there!

I will probably update this guide later on - some reboots may not be necessary (understand: step-by-step guide may be optimized to avoid some reboots) but I am describing the steps I took to achieve that which did include some trial & error (that I spared you guys)

Now you have a nice MHackMini running MacOSX Lion 10.7.x : Enjoy!

    FeedBack much appreciated

Update#1 : Unfortunately, I could not get the HDMI output to work passed the Apple Boot Screen
I'm only getting signal from the DVI output.
My purpose is to use the AsRock Vision 3D as Media Center (understand : using a flat screen instead of a monitor along with whichever software provides a 10-foot UI such as XBMC), I need a DVI connector on the TV-side
In the end, no software solution but I had more luck hooking it up to my TV using a DVI to HDMI cable or adapter

Update#2 : Updated to Lion 10.7.2 from App Store.
Lost GigaBit & WiFi upon reboot (possibly due to me also fiddling with BIOS setting - will get to that later on).
    Re-Installed them using MultiBeast 4.2.1.
Also applied the 10.7.2 Nvidia Fermi Patch.
In the process, found a way to get Sleep to work!
It is dependent upon a BIOS setting short named STR (Sleep To RAM or something)
STR was set to AutoDetect but the machine would reboot instead of going to sleep
SETTING STR to DISABLED in BIOS makes SLEEP FUNCTIONAL

Current issues : Unable to get signal from DVI output passed the Apple Boot Screen & no internal IR receiver (canont use Apple IR Remote)

Workarounds for Current issues : Use Hardware HDMI to DVI Adapter & External USB IR Receiver

Adding Bluetooth Support : Used Hardware USB BlueTooth receiver from Belkin - no driver required AND works at BIOS level which is pretty useful.
Can now use Apple Wireless KeyBoard & Mouse

    Hello mattmacd,

Thanks a lot for this tutorial. I am so close to by an asrock 3d vision 137b but since your tutorial is about the 137d version I am wondering wether the blue ray drive would work under MacOSX lion. Do you know about this?

I would be very happy if I heard back from you. Thanks a lot in advance,

Hey there, in regards to bluray support on MacOSX I believe it's not so much the drives that have compatibility issues:

The bluray drive would most likely mount

It will allow you to burn and read DVDs and burn and read blurays (after all they sell external BluRay writers for MacOSX)
    BUT
you will not be able to play commercial video blurays - that requires a Sony license which Apple does not pay, therefore no video bluray support in MacOSX

Apparently bluray software players for MacOSX exist - not free of course, you will have to pay for that bluray license

So there, hope this will help - I'm mostly guessing so I suggest you go ahead and google/double check that just to be sure

    Bye!
