    Default Self-assigned IP address

    Dear all,

I have tried in vain with both my on-board NIC on an EP45-UD3R and my ENLGA-1320 PCI NIC to get access to the ethernet internet in my office (at a university).

The problem is that I always get the "Self-assigned IP address" error report, where the computer somehow ends up with a 169.x.x.x IP address.

Does anyone know how to fix this? -- I would very much appreciate your help!

    Best,
    Tim

You try to obtain an ip-address using DHCP. Self-assigned ip-address means, that DHCP could not obtain one.

Maybe there is no DHCP server available, or not reachable. A problem with the router, with the LAN or cable(s), or with the PC itself, like not working ethernet/wifi.

You could try to use if manually assigned ip-address. If this works, then it's a problem with your DHCP server.

    Hi Asere,

Thanks a lot for the reply and advice. When I plug in my laptop (PC), it connects fine without me having to set up anything, so I am thinking that it is an issue with the mac rather than the server.

Furthermore, I tried to put in an IP address manually, and though it then says "connected", I cannot get an internet connection.

Do you have any further advice?

    Thanks again.

I had this self-assigned IP as well some time ago after messing around with the settings.
Installing the Realtek R1000.kext solved that for me.

I also had this issue...in an effort to give back to the community here is how I solved it. FYI this was in 10.5 and 10.6 on EP45-DS3R (F10)

I had Lan 1 enabled and lan 2 disabled in the bios originally when it did not work. I simply disabled lan 1 and enabled lan 2...working great.
