Apple has just released a new update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Update 10.6.8 does not contain any new functions, but merely bugfixes. This is ofcourse due to the fact that Apple is going to release OS X Lion in the upcoming weeks, so updates for Snow Leopard will slow down.
The App Store has been updated for the release of Lion, as the only way to get Lion is through the App Store. Other fixes are some problems with Preview, IPv6 and VPN. Apple also has fixed security issues regarding the Mac Defender spyware for Mac.
On the other hand though, this update contains many good things for us Hackintoshers. It has a new kernel, the 10.8.0 Darwin kernel, which has Sandy Bridge support, so this means we don't need a 'legacy' kernel for running Sandy Bridge! Intel HD2000/3000 support has been improved, so people with that chipset should notice some improvements and last but not least there is improved support for the AMD Radeon HD6xxx series of graphics cards, which would possibily open up support for every HD6xxx card available, but this hasn't been proven yet.
We need to warn you though, as there are already reported some problems with 10.6.8, so please backup your systems!
Graphics If you are using a Nvidia 4xx series GPU, you'll need to re-run TonyMac's Graphic card installer.
Audio When you update, your AppleHDA kext will be replaced by the one present in the update. You can fix this by simply reinstalling the audio kexts, or by using an alternative, like VoodooHDA.
USB With this update, the IOUSBFamily.kext will be replaced by a newer one, present in the update. This can be fixed by reinstalling the kext. Users with a (proper) DSDT should not worry about this.
SleepEnabler It is possible that the current SleepEnabler won't work with 10.6.8. We recommend to delete the SleepEnabler kext for now and wait for the 10.6.8 version.
CPU When you don't use the original Vanilla Kernel, beware of possible malfunctions. This is mostly a warning for AMD people, as the current Legacy Kernel does not work on 10.6.8! People who are running Intel Atoms and older Intel processors should wait for an updated kernel, as the Darwin kernel has been changed a bit.
So, in the end, wait for us to tell you guys that it is safe to update, in the meantime, stick with 10.6.7!
