I'm using DVD-RW so that's no problem, I'll try those ideas also.

With regards to the USB issue, after I have done the switching which worked as expected and loaded the installer, the dialog which usually appears with the languages options doesn't appear. You may wish to ignore this for now though as I try again...

    Thanks by the way!

Well, with two things working and the language options window not showing, it does not seem that there is a fundamental issue with the boot/load process then.

I would download the L2 image from another source than the one you got thus far and start over to see if it makes a difference.

    YAY IT WORKS!

    I didn't use the 32 bit flag, otherwise I think used -v -busratio=20 -graphicsenabler=yes -npci=0x2000
I re-burnt the iATKOS L2 dmg with a Macbook (not mine) since I couldn't get it working on my Windows computer at 'x2' speed. I then got lots of different error messages in the log, none of which seemed to affect anything of importance. Smooth sailing from there really.

I'm trying to get an external Wi-Fi card working now...

    Thanks for your help!

    Navrit,

Fantastic - thanks for trying and confirming that the hp8440p with NVS3100m card works for you.

Two questions to clarify your results and current situation.

    1) Have you applied the kexts that I uploaded under the Miscellaneous section?
Did you follow the rest of the process steps I described?
I would like to confirm if those steps work correctly as posted or if they need to be tweaked, so please let me know.

FYI, regarding the disc burning deal on Windows, I had to use the extra step of converting the dmg file to an iso file because at the time I did not have easy access to any Mac machine.
I'm glad you were able to use a Macbook to create another DVD.
Somehow the first one must have had an issue.
I would still recommend others use the USB stick process I described for speed and risk reasons.

    2) Which external USB wifi stick are you trying to use, just curious?
I'm using either the Airllink 101 AWLL5088 which is a little nubby thing that barely sticks out of the USB port (truly mini).
I also have the Rosewill Mini N2 which is a little larger but uses the same chipset and gets a more stable connection in the location I use it from the most. I suppose that antenna size for radios is really something you just cannot simply shrink too much before it has impact.

Again, congrats. Hopefully your effort will inspire others to try also.
There are so many stories and attempts on the boards but not that many seem actually successful.

For others who have done this, please provide feedback.
The kexts file has been downloaded about 100 times now between the first version I had posted and the current one.
I am assuming people do not just download it without trying to use it....

    1)
Yes, I used your kexts and followed your steps otherwise. Although I had to use other boot flags as previously mentioned.
I agree, the USB method should definitely be tried, installing via DVD is painfully slow...

I'm trying one with a Ralink 3572 chipset, also a 'mini' adapter.

I hope others with 8440p laptops join in, it is definitely worth it and this guide definitely helped guiding me through.

Cool, glad to hear you were able to follow the process steps then.

Sounds like I should add the ncpi flag to the description, because of your experience and also because the Chameleon loader on my machine sure shows that it is using it.

What I really like about the end result is the ease of switching between a Windows 7 system installed on an SSD in the optical bay (bought as an aftermarket accessory) and it looks great as if it always was part of the machine to begin with.
Then F9 to boot off the normal hard drive or the SSD switches between the 2 setups.

Something no Macbook has is the pointing stick, which works fine with the sensitivity settings I adjusted.
Also, the anti-glare 1600x900 screen is nice to use.

By the way, on the system preferences screen is an advanced option to calibrate the screen colors.
I think it is looking better than I can get it to look under Windows.

Explaining the obvious I suppose, but for the wireless I simply connected via regular ethernet, downloaded the sw for the wifi stick, installed and was up and running there.

By the way, I upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of memory but I can't say that seems to make a meaningful difference, at least not on Geekbench scores.

Have fun and thanks for confirming the process!

I about to install Ubuntu 11.10 alongside and maybe Windows (7 or 8 Pre Developers Release 1 on a separate drive).
I agree, the colour management is better under Lion. This installation got a Geekbench score of 5930 by the way, the 32-bit tests

When I was trying to install the drivers for my wireless adapter with a Ralink 5370 chipset (not 3572 as I previously said), I couldn't find suitable drivers at first. That is until I installed the Ralink Wireless Utility which actually worked!

It's so fun now that this has finally worked

I have played with Ubuntu also but ended up using Zorin 5.2 on two machines. The user interface is very much like w7 but with the advantages of Ubuntu underneath. Very suited for kids as the Software Center has lots of free software and I do not have to mess much with maintenance unlike on Windows.

Re your Geekbench score, that is a nice number for a dual core IMO. See

    Mac Benchmarks

for other scores. Yours are right in line with the highest scores of the 2010 models, which makes sense.

So who is next to convert their hp 8440p to OSX?
Navrit's success confirms that the process works and that iATKOS L2 plus the posted kexts plus the hp 8440p get the job done!
The kexts have been downloaded more than 100 times now, so I have to assume people are trying the process.
    Anyone?

Updated main process description to include the npci=0x2000 flag, per Navrit's experience.

    Hi,

I can confirm this procedure works on a 8540p too (as expected). Performance indeed is not bad at all.

Setup iATKOS L2 even installed multiboot automatically for me (no input needed from me!). At boot time, I'm able to choose between Win7 now & Lion.

    Thanks for your effort!
