Do you see the camera volume on the Desktop or in the Finder sidebar?
Try to connect the Card containing the images with a cardreader.
That's a baddie. I always use Aperture, and both my S52 and D200 launch it when I plug them in and turn them on. I set that in the Aperture preferences. Is there something like that in Iphoto? Maybe the first time around, the software needs to be set to see the camera?
Open up Image Capture and see if the camera is recognized.
