Default ASUS N71JQ LION Installed - HD 5730 black screen

So i have managed to install LION on my system
ASUS N71JQ, i7 740QM, Radeon HD 5730, 4GB RAM with all drivers functioning properly from Audio, wifi, USB 2.0 and 3.0, Bluetooth, SD Card reader, HDMI, touchpad etc.

The only problem i have is that i have a black screen on my internal monitor if graphics is enabled, whereas i get full graphics on external monitors straight up to 1080p with acceleration.

Anyone knows how to solve this problem contact me please.

HERE IS A TUTORIAL AND DRIVERS I HAVE USED.

Hey Jehu,

I have the same issue as you as I have the same laptop.

May I please ask you a quick question please? Where you able to get the microphone and webcam to work please? I haven't but I would really like to.

Thanks!

Microphone works perfect and Camera as well but only when I connect an external monitor and get FULL Graphics. The Internal black display is my ONLY PROBLEM!!

Download and use my drivers, there is also a tutorial in it. I think u have to be a member to download now but it is good since u get 15GB free storage.

Thanks Jehu. I did download them and actually used VoodooHDA to get the audio working. I did not follow the whole tutorial as I installed iAtkos L2 then updated to 10.7.3, so I took a different approach. I'll double check which kext I am missing again, thanks for letting me know.

For the internal black display, I have the same issue. It is the graphics card, I hope there is a solution but I am not sure if there is one!

Hey Jehu,

This is a thin shot, but do you think this could work: Ati 5730 Full res With QE/CI (have problem not really good) - InsanelyMac Forum

It doesn't specify if this is for VGA or internal display. It's a slim shot but I thought it could maybe work.

Tried all those stuff. Sad thing is only Chimera detects this card and also some versions of clover. My best bet is with Chimera 1.7. Used the tutorial for LCD and it works i guess but Externally since i get the correct resolutions. Eulemur and Vervet detects dual display and the correct resolutions for each but the internal is still black. If u read the tutorial thoroughly i highlighted some of these issues.

Hey Jehu,

Thanks for letting me know of your results. I personally only have a laptop (no external monitor), so I cannot test resolutions and QE/CI on my laptop. It is really frustrating!

Your guide is really great btw, thank you. Although I have a different version of Lion (10.7.3 updated from iAtkos L2), it allowed me to get the sound working and WiFi really quickly (still figuring out webcam and mic).

I'll let you know if I become able to get the graphics card to work internally or if I stumble upon a good answer!

PS: On another post, someone kindly told me that http://netkas.org/ was the best place to ask about video graphics card. I did a very deep digging to find if anyone got it working but couldn't find anything.

Hey Jehu,

I can definitely do that! And even better, I'll make a simple tutorial that I did follow.

I personally watched a few videos on YouTube to get a gist of how to install it. I thought this video was pretty good: How to install iAtkos L2 from USB - YouTube

It is a simple video but shows the most important part of it.

Here is my mini tutorial:

1) Partition the USB key using "Disk Utility" making sure you have one Mac OS Journaled (extended) and check "GUID Partition table" in options.

2) Go to the restore tab, and put iAtkos L2 as the source, and the USB key as the destination.

Here is where things get a little different:

3) I used Chimera v1.7 as my bootloader. It is available here.

4) At this point, I would get my machine to freeze on "PCI Configuration Begin". I used the solution from netkas here. You only need to replace one kext, IOPCIFamily.kext, and not the AppleACPIPlatform, in System/Library/Extensions

5) At this point, booting with "-f" or "-x" flag lets me go into the installer. "GraphicsEnabler=No" may actually be a better flag, but I didn't end up trying it. (With "-v" I do get stuck on "DSMOS has arrived").

Optional:

You may get a Bluetooth error 402. You may still be able to boot the installer with "-x" or "-f", but if you want to solve this error, remove IOBluetoothFamily.kext from System/Library/Extensions

7) During install, you can use "Customize" to install kext and patches. The two kext I got where Ethernet (it's the top one in "Wired") and SATA in disk.

8) After the installation is done, I still get "PCI Configuration Begin", but worry not! Just reboot into the installer, go to the Terminal and do the following:

rm -rf /Volumes/<your HDD>/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIFamily.kext
cp -R /Volumes/iAtkos\ L2/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIFamily.kext /Volumes/<your HDD>/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIFamily.kext
The rm is not necessary but I do prefer to make sure it gets deleted and then the other one gets copied.

9) Reboot with "GraphicsEnabler=No". If for some reason you see some ATI errors when booting, you have to reload the boot CD and delete the drivers from /Volumes/<your HDD>/System/Library/Extensions/.

Something like:
rm -rf /Volumes/<your HDD>/System/Library/Extensions/ATI*
10) After doing all this, you should be on Lion 10.7.2 with Ethernet working! To update to 10.7.3, just download the "Combo update" from Apple and install it. You will get "PCI Configuration Begin" again. Redo step 8) to copy the IOPCIFamily.kext from the USB drive to your HDD again. You should be able to boot in 10.7.3!

(I have not tried updating to 10.7.4 but I think it should work the same way).

I hope that helps! Please let me know if it does, and how it goes (feel free to include my steps in your tutorial if useful and change whatever you need).

Another potential video you can check is: How to install Mac OS x Lion on Asus Laptop - Intel- Part 1 - YouTube. This person installed iAtkos L2 with an ASUS laptop (different model). I think he added some extra steps though.

Good luck!

Another method that does work for me, is the Unibeast + MultiBeast: tonymacx86 Blog: UniBeast: Install Mac OS X Lion Using an All-In-One Bootable USB Drive

It is pretty straightforward. The only issue I had was "PCI Configuration Begin" and to fix it, I followed step 4:

4) At this point, I would get my machine to freeze on "PCI Configuration Begin". I used the solution from netkas here. You only need to replace one kext, IOPCIFamily.kext, and not the AppleACPIPlatform, in System/Library/Extensions
I did not need to boot with "GraphicsEnabler=No" but my video graphics card never got detected with it.

If you want to dual boot another OS with this method, you need to also follow How to update to Mac OS X Lion on a MBR partition before installing from USB.

Did you try to use your own custom DSDT?

Someone with a different laptop who runs ATI Mobility Radeon 5730 got the internal displays working with their own DSDT: tonymacx86 Forum • Information (bottom message from Jedis).

I also found this: tonymacx86 Forum • Information

I think that's all I can find now. I am trying to make my own custom DSDT but I'm having issues patching. Let me know if you find anything please.
