  2. Hey friends! I wanted to buy a MacBook Air because of the battery life but the non-replaceable RAM made me hesitating since I may need more later. I already tried to install Lion one day on my current laptop but it failed (graphics were not working, GT 630M and HD 4000) and I decided to give up. Now, I think it would be a great idea to make one since the Aspire M5-481T is sold 500$ at The Source?and its warranty plan is sold 120$ for 3 years. Before buying this, I would like some help to make sure I could do it. CPU : Intel Core i5-3317U @ 1.7GHz (up to 2.6GHz) RAM : 6GB of RAM (can't find the brand, DDR3-1066) HD : 500GB (Western Digital) and 20GB SSD (can replace it for a 128GB I have) GC : Intel HD 4000 Sc.: Realtek (ALC269 probably...)   3. Introduction This article will attempt to guide you through the process of installing Mountain Lion 10.8.4 and Windows 8 into a UEFI Ivy Bridge system. My project is using the Gigabyte Z77N-WIFI board with the i3-3225 processor (Hey! I'm on a tight budget!), but these techniques should work with most any Ivy Bridge setup. Some of these steps will cover problems specific to Gigabyte UEFI boards. Gigabyte boards have a particular problem with Clover EFI that presents itself as a spontaneous reboot after sleep. This can happen almost immediately or after a minute or two. After scouring the forums and trying every possible reported "solution", I finally concluded that the entire problem was Gigabyte's implementation of the UEFI CSM (Compatibility Support Module) to support Legacy Booting. To get sleep to work properly, we have to give up the option to boot Legacy BIOS based OS's without temporarily changing the System Settings. This also means, much to my chagrin, Windows 7 will not be available for dual booting. It still relies on the CSM to complete the startup process. UEFI boards other than Gigabyte don't suffer from the sleep issue, but should benefit from similar settings. I've also implemented a Fusion Drive system into this system. This is the merger of a small SSD (Solid State Drive) with a much larger HDD (Hard Disk Drive) to produce a relatively high speed hybrid. Unfortunately, Clover's Installer isn't "Fusion Smart" and requires a bit of old fashion finesse to get it right. To simplify the process, everything is initially installed on the HDD with the SSD being used as the EFI Boot drive until the Fusion Drive is created. I used a SSD from a MacBook Air because it has native TRIM support in OS X. Any SSD will do, but getting TRIM to work is a project I leave for you… CREDITS - I didn't do this alone... The processes I describe here are derived from many other sources. The process of getting the Dual Boot of Windows and Mac was originally suggested by a guide at Mac-Hacks and enhanced in a tutorial at Gadget Unit. I further enhanced the process for this system. The process of correcting the Gigabyte Sleep/Wake issue was derived from the many discussions at ProjectOSX and my own experimentation. The process of building the Fusion Drive was developed from many sources and a lot of trial and error. Of course the Clover group at ProjectOSX, in particular, the many posts from Slice have been a great help in resolving the issues. STEP 0 - A few precautions and preparations… Your boot drive will be erased during this process. If this is your initial setup of your Hackintosh, then this shouldn't be a problem. Follow my guide here to create a Clover Mountain Lion Installer and come back here to use it. If you've already got a Mountain Lion Hackintosh, make sure you have a full Time Machine backup. In either case, be prepared to spend a number of hours (mostly waiting) to do the full install. Feel free to take a break between steps. If you follow these steps to the letter, your install should go smoothly. Download the latest version of Clover. You will need it. I suggest that you put it on your Mountain Lion Installer drive for handy access. Get the latest version of FakeSMC/HWSensors if you don't already have it. You also want to download the ssdtPRGen script to generate a Speedstep corrected SSDT for your system. Like the Clover Installer, place this on your Mountain Lion Installer drive. STEP 1 - Update to the Latest UEFI Firmware and configure it accordingly. These instructions are for the GA-Z77N-WIFI. Other Gigabyte 7 Series boards should use similar settings. Non-Gigabyte boards should be setup according to their needs. I opted to use version F3d of the GA-Z77N-WIFI firmware. This version supports the Secure Boot option in Windows 8 and works flawlessly with ML. If you choose to use the F2 firmware, it'll work, but Windows 7 is still not an option. Follow the instructions on Gigabyte's site to install the firmware. After installing the firmware, enter the Setup screen by pressing <DEL> at the post screen. Press <F7> to load the Optimized BIOS Default Settings. There are only a couple changes required, and a few that are recommended. For the F2 firmware: Navigate to the BIOS Features and set CSM Support to Never. This will repair the Sleep issue, but prevent booting into Windows 7 and Legacy (Non-EFI) Systems. For the F3d firmware: Navigate to the BIOS Features and set OS Type to Windows 8 WHQL. Don't worry about the CSM Support setting. This mode will switch it to Never anyway. You can optionally set to Windows 8 (without WHQL) but you must set CSM Support to Never to overcome the sleep issue. WHQL = Windows Hardware Quality Labs. This allows for the Secure Boot options in Windows 8. Mountain Lion seems quite happy with it as well… For either firmware: Optionally, Enable Intel Virtualization Technology if you want to use Virtual Machines through Fusion, Parallels or Q. Navigate to Peripherals and set XHCI Pre-Boot Driver to Enabled and XHCI Mode to Auto. Optionally, if you didn't install a serial port, you may want to go to Super IO Configuration and Disable the Serial Port A. Another optional setting in Power Management is to set Soft-Off by PWR-BTN to Delay 4 Seconds to avoid accidental power down. Save your settings by pressing <F10>. STEP 2 - Create USB Installers for both Mountain Lion and Windows 8 For this, you will need two flash drives. Each at least 8GB. If you haven't already, build your Mountain Lion Installer stick using my instructions here. This will boot through UEFI without problems. If you've already got Mountain Lion installed, make sure that you have a full Time Machine backup. You will erase your primary drive to get Windows 8 installed. If you have Windows 8 on a DVD or ISO file, you can create a bootable USB drive quite easily using Terminal. I prefer to do it while booted into the Mountain Lion Installer to prevent sleeping during the process. If using an ISO, Place the file onto your Time Machine drive or the Mountain Lion install drive. Use Disk Utility to format the Windows 8 drive using Master Boot Record partitioning and in FAT32. Name the stick WIN8INSTALL. If using an ISO file, go to the File menu and select Open Disk Image… Locate and open the Windows 8 ISO. Make note of the mounted volume's name. If using the DVD, insert it into your DVD drive and make note of it's volume name as it appears in Disk Utility. Quit out of Disk Utility. Select Terminal from the Utilities menu. In the Terminal window, enter: > [COLOR="#0000FF"]cd /Volumes[/COLOR] > [COLOR="#0000FF"]ls[/COLOR] You should see both the mounted ISO or DVD and the WIN8INSTALL USB drive. Enter the following to build the Installer, replacing <ISO/DVD Name> with the Windows 8 volume name you noted above: > [COLOR="#0000FF"]ditto [COLOR="#00AA00"]<ISO/DVD Name>[/COLOR] WIN8INSTALL[/COLOR] This will take awhile. If it displays errors, you may need to use an alternate copying technique: DO NOT ENTER THESE COMMANDS UNLESS YOU HAD ERRORS WITH THE DITTO COMMAND! > [COLOR="#0000FF"]rm -r WIN8INSTALL/*[/COLOR] (removes the partial install from above) > [COLOR="#0000FF"]cp -r [COLOR="#00AA00"]<ISO/DVD Name>[/COLOR]/* WIN8INSTALL/[/COLOR] Of course, you could use the copy (cp) command first, but IMO, ditto is usually faster. STEP 3 - Reinitialize HDD for Dual Boot Insert the Mountain Lion Installer drive and the Time Machine drive, if appropriate. Startup using <F12> to select the UEFI: USB USB Hard Drive (Yes… It looks like a typo… That's how Gigabyte presents it!) Select Disk Utility. Select your Hard drive and then click the Partition tab. After selecting 2 Partitions click on the Options… button and make sure that GUID Partition Table is selected. Set the first partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and name it as you wish… I tend to use the old reliable Macintosh HD. Set the partition's size to the size you want your Macintosh partition to be. Set the second partition to Free Space. We'll worry about that later. STEP 4 - Install or Restore Mountain Lion Quit Disk Utility and proceed to restore the Time Machine backup or Install Mac OS. Your system will automatically restart. Use <F12> again to startup from the USB volume until we get Clover installed. After the installation/restoration is complete, you should have a working copy of Mountain Lion running. If FakeSMC isn't already installed; Install it now. STEP 5 - Install Clover V2 If you are going with the Fusion Drive, shut down the system and install your SSD into SATA port 0, moving your HDD to SATA port 1. Clover is going to end up on the SSD for normal operation. Boot back into Mountain Lion using the ML Installer drive as above. Run the Clover V2 installer. At the installer screen click the Custom button and make sure that it's set to install for UEFI system. This will install Clover into the EFI partition and leave it mounted for configuration. At this time, if you haven't already, install Xcode from the App Store. This will allow editing the 'config.plist' file a lot easier. While that's downloading, go into Disk Utility and Partition your SSD drive. After selecting 1 Partition click on the Options… button and make sure that GUID Partition Table is selected. Set the partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and name it SSD. Open the mounted EFI drive and navigate to EFI/Clover/config.plist. Double-click it to open it with Xcode (or for you die-hards; TextEdit.). Make the changes as indicated below. Some of these settings don't go along with conventional recommendations. They are not mistakes. For instance MountEFI does not have to be a Boolean setting and needs to be manually set to get it to work with Fusion drives. Also, the boot argument darkwake is now a boolean setting and should be Yes. The SSDT Settings are temporary and will be corrected later. We need to generate it first. On my system I opted to set the SMBIOS/ProductName to iMac13,1 and SMBIOS/Family to iMac to match my board and processor. The automatically generated Serial Number in this configuration didn't work with the App Store, so I had to create a custom SMBIOS/SerialNumber to make it work. Most of the time, it's fine to go with what Clover gives you. After making the changes, save your work and reboot. Press <F12> at the post screen and select the UEFI: associated with your HDD. Before you proceed, press <F4> to make a copy of the DSDT and associated files. Now boot into Mountain Lion again. If all went well, you should see an empty EFI drive mounted in the Finder window. Navigate to /Applications/Utilities and open Terminal. Enter the following to mount your HDD's EFI Partition: [table="width: 100%, align: left"] [tr] [td]> [COLOR="#0000FF"]diskutil list[/COLOR][/td] [td]Make note of the drive with Macintosh HD on it. It should be disk1…[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]> [COLOR="#0000FF"]mkdir "/Volumes/EFI 1"[/COLOR][/td] [td]This creates a mounting point for the second EFI partition[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]> [COLOR="#0000FF"]sudo mount_msdos /dev/disk1s1 "/Volumes/EFI 1"[/COLOR][/td] [td]Mounts the partition.[/td] [/tr] [/table] Open Both EFI volumes and drag the EFI folder from the one that has it, to the other. This will install Clover for when we build the Fusion drive. Now move the EFI folder from the original drive to the Trash and empty the Trash. Open the EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/origin folder and copy the SSDT.aml file to the desktop. Use the ssdtPRGen script to generate the corrected file and copy the ssdt_pr.aml file to the EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/patched folder. Rename it to SSDT.aml. Restart the computer again and use <F12> to select EFI boot of your SSD drive. Boot into Clover and immediately press an Arrow key to stop the automatic boot. Use the right arrow key to advance to Clover Boot Options on the lower line and press <Return>. Verify that the path shows Sata(0x0,0x0). If not, press <Esc> and select the other Clover Boot Options. Press <Return> at Add Clover as UEFI boot option. Select your Macintosh HD to verify the system boots okay. If you haven't done a full Time Machine Backup yet, now is the time to do it. We will be erasing Mountain Lion in Step 7. STEP 6 - Install Windows 8 DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL WITH THE WINDOWS INSTALLER. IT WON'T WORK AND COULD CORUPT EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE SO FAR! Now that Mountain Lion is working, we're ready to install Windows 8. Shut down your computer and temporarily remove the SSD and Time Machine Drives. Startup your system to the Windows 8 Install drive using the <F12> key. Once the first window of the Installer is loaded press <Shift> and <F10> to open a Command Line window. Setup your partitions as follows: [table="width: 100%, align: left"] [tr] [td]> [COLOR="#0000FF"]diskpart[/COLOR][/td] [td]Run the DiskPart utility[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]DISKPART> [COLOR="#0000FF"]list volume[/COLOR][/td] [td]Make note of the drive letter of the USB drive. It should be [B]D[/B][/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]DISKPART> [COLOR="#0000FF"]list disk[/COLOR][/td] [td]Make note of the sizes… Your HDD should be disk [B]0[/B][/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]DISKPART> [COLOR="#0000FF"]select disk 0[/COLOR][/td] [td]or the disk your HDD appeared as above[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]DISKPART> [COLOR="#0000FF"]list partition[/COLOR][/td] [td]You should see partitions 1 (EFI), 2 (MacOS) and 3 (Recovery)[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]DISKPART> [COLOR="#0000FF"]create partition msr size=128[/COLOR][/td] [td]Microsoft System Reserved. Now we need to extract the installation files. > [COLOR="#0000FF"]cd \Windows\System32[/COLOR] > [COLOR="#0000FF"]dism /apply-image /imagefile:D:\sources\install.wim /index:1 /applydir:C:\[/COLOR] The typical windows installation is now being copied to your Windows partition. This is going to take some time. Be patient. You deserve a coffee break! Now we install the EFI boot code… > [COLOR="#0000FF"]C:[/COLOR] > [COLOR="#0000FF"]bcdboot C:\Windows /l en-us /s S:[/COLOR] You should have received a message that the boot files were copied. If so, shut down your system, remove the USB drive and reconnect your SSD and Time Machine drives. Now startup your system and select Boot Microsoft EFI boot menu from EFI from the Clover display. Go ahead and Activate and configure your Windows install. Install the logicboard's drivers and any available updates. STEP 7 - Install Fusion Drive (FINALLY!) Before proceeding, verify that everything is working perfectly. Make adjustments to your EFI/config.sys file so that everything (sleep?) works correctly. With the BIOS setup is this manner it should be running great. Even USB 3 should recover from sleep mode without the Unmounted disk issue. Make double sure that your Mountain Lion is backed up to Time Machine recently. You need this to install the Fusion drive. Also make sure that your SSD and Time Machine Drives are mounting. Restart your computer and select Boot Recovery from Macintosh HD from the Clover display. This is very similar to the ML Install disk but always available when you need it. Select Terminal from the Utilities menu. click the green Zoom button in the upper left corner of the Terminal window. We want to read what's there without scrolling! Enter the following: > [COLOR="#0000FF"]diskutil list[/COLOR] Verify that the SSD drive is disk0s2 and the Macintosh HD is disk1s2. If not; Shut down, restart and try again. We don't want any mistakes here. Let's proceed were now going to actually create the Fusion drive! [table="width: 100%, align: left"] [tr] [td]> [COLOR="#0000FF"]diskutil cs create Fusion\ Group SSD Macintosh\ HD[/COLOR][/td] [td]We are creating [B]Fusion Group[/B] from the partitions [B]SSD[/B] and [B]Macintosh HD[/B][/td] [/tr] [tr] [td][/td] [td]Select and copy the long GUID address of the Fusion Group (between the quotes)[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td]> [COLOR="#0000FF"]diskutil cs createVolume[/COLOR] [COLOR="#FFA500"]<FG GUID>[/COLOR] [COLOR="#0000FF"]jhfs+ Macintosh\ HD 100%[/COLOR][/td] [td]replace [COLOR="#FFA500"]<FG GUID>[/COLOR] by pasting the above GUID.[/td] [/tr] [tr] [td][/td] [td]This will format our drive as [B]Mac OS Extended (Journaled)[/B] and name it [B]Macintosh HD[/B][/td] [/tr] [/table] Quit out of Terminal and launch Disk Utility. You should see the Fusion Group listed with partitions Macintosh HD and Windows below it. Quit Disk Utility and Restore your Time Machine backup. Take a break this will take an hour or two… STEP 8 - Finish configuring Clover. This final step is cosmetic. We want to remove the options in Clover that we don't want or need. Before we proceed, open the Clover panel in System Preferences and go to the NVRam Variables tab. Do not change the Force mount selected ESP at startup from disk0. This is the setting in config.plist and setting it here would negate that setting. Let's hope the Clover team will add support for Fusion drives soon… Go ahead and set Save NVRAM contents to disk to Auto. Now click Show All (Upper left of window) and open the Sharing panel. Set a name for your computer. This will be stored in NVRAM. Again, click Show All and select the Startup Disk panel. Select your Mac boot disk again to store in NVRAM. Restart to store your NVRAM settings and proceed. In the left column, under /Library/Logs you should find CloverEFI. Click the arrow to the left of it to expose the boot logs and select the last in the group. Scroll to the top of the file and then scroll down until you find the line with 0. Volume:. This is the list of found possible boot drives. Go through the list and locate the partitions that are potentially bootable with a GUID. For example: 0:468 0:000 0. Volume: 0:468 0:000 PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x1f,0x2)/Sata(0x0,0x0) 0:470 0:001 Volume 'Whole Disc Boot', OS '', GUID = <null guid> 0:470 0:000 1. Volume: 0:470 0:000 PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x1f,0x2)/Sata(0x1,0x0) 0:471 0:000 Volume 'Whole Disc Boot', OS '', GUID = <null guid> 0:471 0:000 2. This is the partition that actually boots our Fusion drive! Volume 7 - The drive1 EFI partition Volume 8 - The HDD segment of our Fusion Drive Volume 9 - The ML Recovery HD partition. Volume 10 - The MSR partition of Windows 8 Volume 11 - The actual Windows 8 partition Volume 12 - The drive2 EFI Partition. This is the EFI of my Time Machine backup drive Volume 13 - The actual Time Machine partition We can safely ignore Volumes 0 through 3 above. The only one that would appear is Volume 2 if we inserted a UEFI bootable DVD. We can also safely ignore volumes 4, 7 and 12 since we previously set Clover to ignore Internal EFI partitions. We want to copy part of the GUID strings of the rest of them except 6 (Mac OS Boot) and 9 (Recovery Boot) and place that string into Hide items in config.plist. I use the string portion starting with "HD" to the end of the line. Note that we're hiding Windows. Because the EFI partition of the Windows drive contains the Windows boot code, it will automatically be listed as well. And In Conclusion With these changes we should have a system that will boot reliably to both Windows 8 and Mountain Lion as well as the latter's Recovery Partition.
  4. I got fusion drive working and got Chameleon to boot fusion drive after some terminal command. It seems you need to put extra folder in both boot OS X partition so my question is: When you edit DSDT or change plist, do you still have to run command to copy extra folder on those partition?
